Chemistry profiles and testing are performed continuously each day. These tests are prioritized by the order of the physician — “STAT”, “Urgent”, or “Routine”
CHEMISTRY PROCEDURES REQUIRING PATIENT PREPARATION:
- The following procedures require fasting for accurate results:
- Gastrin
- Glucose
- Glucose Tolerance
- Iron
- Lipid Profile – 12-14 hours since last food
- Triglyceride – 12-14 hours since last food
- The following procedures require special timing:
- Digoxin – Blood drawn 8 hours following dose
- Theophylline – Blood drawn 8 hours following dose
- B12 and Folate – Blood drawn prior to a B12 administration
- Trobramycin, Gentamicin, Vancomycin
i. Trough – Blood drawn 15-30 minutes before dose
ii. Peak –
- IM injection – Blood drawn 1 hours after dose
- 30 minute IV infusion – Blood drawn 30 minutes after IV infusion completed
- 60 minute IV infusion – Blood drawn immediately after IV infusion completed

- PSA – Blood drawn prior to prostate massage
- Tegretol
i. Tablet dose – Blood drawn 4-5 hours after dose
ii. Suspension – Blood drawn one to one and one half hours after dose
